The End

Well its the end of the semester. It was a ride indeed. Their was a lot of all nighters and a lot of plain hard work. It was a weird semester, it took a long time to get it going, a slow start, but in the end I feel I have accomplished quite a bit. new territory was tread this semester and a lot of doors and new ideas are open for next semester and after that. I'm very excited for next semester but I am definitely ready for a break.

The Lathe

Last night I used the lathe for pretty much the first time. It was rough at first, but once i figured out how to position the blade it started cutting well and it became quite a bit if fun. Trying to cut out and smooth out sections became soothing to me after awhile. The Hammer came out pretty good to me and i look forward to trying out the lathe some more.

My Plexiglass

Pics of my plexiglass that Frankie took, that I just took off of his Bespoke page.

SOFA space ships

These works were some of my favorite. the ships were simple in form, but very stylistic and fun to me. I loved the retro look to all of his pieces. I have since started my own ship, but mine is going to be a deep sea submersible. Taking me to other worlds.

SOFA Deep Sea Style

All these piece that were present at SOFA reminded me of the deep sea. The top two remind me of my own work, as in the plexiglass and that style of work.

Deep Sea Light

These are other Photos I took awhile ago when the Bespoke Deep Sea Light was still in progress. It all came together pretty well although it does not function quite right but I am excited for break when I plan on picking it back up again and making everything function correctly. At the moment the fan blades can not muster up enough to get a the fish reflecter inside to spin but hopefully soon that will change.

Rough Waters on the Deep Sea

The Work and style that has inspired me all semester.

Plexiglass

This is a work in progress photo of the part of my Deep Sea Light. In the above photos is the design of what is now sandblasted on to the Plexiglass. It is based on a style I have been working with all Semester, a representation of water I really have grown fond of. It really worked out well and has since inspired other works. One which I'm trying to get done by the end of the semester is a triptych of circles in the same vain of the plexi but out of sturdy paper.

the monolith

The Monolith is a project I did earlier in the year for my Sculpture class. The project was for us to create a piece for an environment out side of the gallery setting and for that piece to bring something into focus. The city of Milwaukee and every other city or town out the lets waste flow into the rivers and waters around the world and that is what drove me to build the Monolith. Many drains empty out in Bradford Beach when ever there is a storm and the waters have no where else to go. This washes thousands of gallons of sewer water into the lake. I wanted to take this and make it my focus to bring attention to our pollution of the waters.

The design of the Monolith quickly became what it is today. I did not want to represent anything spacific, but I wanted to make it purely a beacon. A large white tower that would stand out in contrast to the gross state of Bradford Beach. It is built out of airplane cloth which was stretched over flat steel rods that made the frame all affixed to a cinder blox. It was created in this manner so that I could place a light inside of it, sort of making a tower of light.

When it was all done I went out at 5 in the morning and placed it on the edge of the water. It was fun going out there, to place my work out in the world and to know I wasn't going to come back for it. To leave it there to mostly be taken way from the city in who knew long. I checked up on it in the days to follow and on the 5th night I came to check up on it it was gone. It was there and people saw it.

The morning I "installed" the Monolith it changed for me. After seeing it on the beach and watching the day grow brighter and brighter and the light inside of it seem to dim it became more about that relationship. It looked beautiful to me, very peaceful and it made me want to create more and to try to find that relationship there and other places again.

Drawings for series

The picture above is a set of 12 drawings I put together in illustrator. I have since then used the laser printer to etch them on to a piece of Plexiglas. They turned out really well on the plexi. LED lights really give the etched lines a glow which I hope to maybe use in my series.

Bespoke: Deep Sea Light

For my Beposke (one of a kind) object I am making a light. It is not meant to light up a room or really give off a lot but more to give a light blue glow to a dark room, it is atmospheric light, one to bring you into the realm of the aquatic, deep in the sea. It has two layers of light. one is right above the plaxiglass bottom to give a constant blue glow. Above that is a sheet of steel that will have many spinning disks which will hopefully rotate when wind is pushed passed them by the set of fans I am making and installing above the Sheet. Hopefully when all it put together it will cause a water effect or give a sense of a school of fish swimming by.

Anodized Aluminum Samples

Yesterday I finished anodizing my 2x2 samples. The idea of making samples is not always a fun one, a lot of work for no particular project, but after getting them done it always feels worth it. I am happy with many of the and there are a couple in particular that I really excite me. They open up possibilities for surface and color work for my Bespoke project and without spending time playing with different coloring techniques on the samples I would have no idea what I could do.

Pictures to come soon, once I get a hold of a camera.

Drew Struzan

Being a film driven person, as I am, I find myself being inspired by the work of many film, but also by the posters created to draw the people into the theaters. To be more precise Drew Struzan creates many works of art for movies I love. Struzan is one of the film industry's most recognizable maker. Whether you know the name or not you know the work. He has created posters for many of the best-known films including Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Indiana Jones. He brings with his work a distinct and detailed look, using airbrushed acrylics and finishing details in colored pencil. He captures the emotion of the film and give it a look of credability, over the many photoshoped posters of today.

Who is Sma?

Hello all, I am Sam Scheller, or Sma (created by my nephew). I am from the glorious La Crosse Wisconsin. The house of my childhood is on the Mississippi so I forever will want to live next to the water. I have always enjoyed anything art related. Drawing and creating form is what i want to keep doing and because of that is why I am now in college majoring in sculpture. I hope to move on from here and into the film industry, building and bring to life creatures and environments through practical effects. As for what I'm interested in or my hobbies that has already come up. Film, particularly horror, sci-fi, but movies in general is what I spend most of my time doing. I also have taken my life love for water and recently started designing my own Deep Sea T-shirts. Along with my Sister, I hope to soon start up a t-shirt company. And that kinda sums me up at this point in time.
